Credit Unions: Building Financial Confidence and Community Health
At BDCU, we believe that financial wellbeing is the foundation for stronger, healthier communities. That’s why Talk Money Week 2025 was such an important moment for us – a chance to start conversations that matter.
This year’s theme, “Start the Conversation”, encouraged people to talk openly about money and take small steps toward financial security. To mark the week, we launched new collaborative research with the University of York’s Healthy Livelihoods team, alongside local anti-poverty and public health networks in Bradford and Kirklees.
What the Research Shows
Our study provides fresh evidence that credit unions are more than financial institutions – they are practical tools for building strong financial foundations that underpin community health and wellbeing. They also offer a tangible way to create a fairer, healthier economy.
As part of this work, we co-produced a Theory of Change and an easy-to-read zine with local people in West Yorkshire. These resources explain how credit unions can shape public health and help tackle inequality in accessible, community-friendly formats.

Why This Matters
Credit unions don’t just help people save and borrow responsibly – they strengthen local economies, reduce financial harm, and foster resilience. By breaking down stigma and encouraging honest conversations about money, we can build communities that thrive.
Talk Money Week Highlights
To bring these ideas to life, BDCU hosted a series of events, including:
- On Campus, In Conversation – Roadshows at the University of Bradford and Bradford College exploring savings, loans, and financial resilience.
- Protecting Communities From Financial Harm – A free webinar with West Yorkshire Police, Stop Loan Sharks England, and other partners.
- Community Event at the Chestnut Centre, Kirklees – Connecting people and sharing practical financial advice.
We also relaunched our payroll partnership with Bradford Council and Bradford Children and Families Trust, making it easier for employees to save and borrow responsibly straight from their pay.
