TALK MONEY WEEK: STARTING THE CONVERSATION AT BDCU

Talk Money Week: Starting the Conversation at BDCU

As part of the national Talk Money Week campaign, BDCU recently led a series of events and initiatives focused on financial wellbeing, resilience and encouraging open conversations about money.

With over 300 people engaged across our activities, we hosted local roadshows, community sessions and a national webinar, all designed to help individuals feel more confident discussing and managing their finances.

Our popular Talk Money Week 2025 webinar ‘Protecting Communities from Financial Harm’ brought 150 people together to hear from representatives from West Yorkshire Police, the Stop Loan Sharks Team, NECA and Bradford Council’s Stop Gambling Service. York University also presented collaborative research demonstrating that credit unions help build financial foundations that support public health and a fairer economy. To make these insights accessible, we’ve co-produced a theory of change and zine with local people in West Yorkshire  as accessible summaries of how credit unions can shape public health and help address inequality.

We were especially proud to bring our Talk Money Week Roadshow to Bradford University and Bradford College, where students and staff joined us for interactive sessions exploring budgeting, saving and accessing support through credit unions, alongside our partners FoodSavers and NECA Gambling Services. These events helped raise awareness of the importance of credit unions and how BDCU supports financial health in educational settings.

In partnership with Dalton Together, we also ran a Money SOS workshop, offering practical tools and advice for managing money in challenging times for local residents in Kirklees. This built on our ongoing Money SOS course, which continues to support people across Bradford and Huddersfield with tailored financial guidance.

Supported by the Money and Pensions Service (Maps), the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL) also highlighted BDCU as a national case study during Talk Money Week, amplifying its impact through a sector-wide press release and showcasing its leadership in community financial resilience.
